Climate Change: The effects on the homeless population on the South Coast of British Columbia.

Climate change across British Columba (BC) is projected to increase hazards and impact the health and well-being of communities. The implications of climate change have physical and mental consequences due to atmospheric rivers that cause floods, rising sea levels, and extreme heat events resulting in wildfire and air pollution (Vancouver Coastal Health 2021a).  The following Industry Readiness for Change Report (report) will focus on climate change in the South Coast Region (SCR) and how it affects the homeless. Figure 1 is an illustration of the SCR. The SCR comprises the Fraser Valley Regional District, Metro Vancouver, the City of Vancouver (Vancity), the southern portion of the Sunshine Coast and the southwestern portion of the Squamish-Lillooet regional district; overall, the SCR covers 46,553 square kilometres (BC 2021).

Research Project: Nudging in Treatment

The Addiction Treatment Nudging research project investigates how nudging can influence addiction treatment completion and length of stay (LoS) and recommends strategies to improve individual, organization, industry and societal outcomes. The research explores the value of consumer psychology, social marketing, and nudging theory. In addition, it analyzes the range of components within the WHS program using the 4P frameworks of behaviour change to determine how to change the behaviour of consumers by influencing them in treatment.

Select Steering Committee Presentation, 2022

Harm reduction advocacy groups stigmatize recovery and discriminate against abstinence. These groups have victimized addicts; they do not need sympathetic pity and concern for their sufferings or misfortunes; they need help – there is a fine line between compassion and enabling. Unfortunately, a percentage of individuals suffering from addiction and overdoses humiliate themselves publicly, engage in extreme self-harm and participate in public drug use and crime. In most instances, individuals hospitalized with a critical addiction issue, such as a mental health crisis, severe withdrawal or overdose, are labelled addicts; the box is ticked, and the individuals are released almost immediately. Health professionals fail to consider that once an individual is administered Narcan, they immediately withdrawal. Wrap-around services are needed to take advantage of the immediate opportunities. At the same time, they are still in acute care to support the individual out of the grips of addiction and provide instant long-term solutions by nudging them toward the desired outcome.
